A skull found in a wooded area outside Detroit may be connected to a previous investigation involving unidentified skeletal remains, authorities say.
A survey crew working near Michigan Avenue and Newburgh Road in the city of Wayne around 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, discovered the skull, according to reports from CBS Detroit, FOX 2 and Click On Detroit.
Wayne Police Deputy Chief Finley Carter III said the skull — which was found without teeth — may be linked to a case from March, when other skeletal remains were uncovered in the same city. Those remains have not yet been identified.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct lab testing in hopes of determining the identity of the person.
Forensic Anthropologist Dr. Carolyn Isaac told FOX 2 that finding the skull will help investigators build a more complete biological profile and potentially match the remains to a missing person. She explained that investigators will compare medical records such as X-rays or CT scans to confirm a possible match.
Officials have not announced a cause of death, and the investigation remains active.
The Wayne Police Department has not responded to a request for additional comment.
