The Kansas City Chiefs could soon be headed across state lines.
On Monday, Dec. 22, Kansas lawmakers unanimously approved incentives to help finance a projected $3 billion domed stadium and surrounding development district, according to reports from The Kansas City Star, The Topeka Capital-Journal and the Associated Press. The plan would cover up to 70% of the total cost.
Gov. Laura Kelly was expected to share more details during a 3 p.m. local-time announcement in Topeka, the Capital-Journal reported. Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt and team president Mark Donovan attended the Monday morning session at the state capitol.
Under the proposal, the Associated Press reported that the bonds would be repaid using state sales and liquor tax revenue generated in the area around the stadium.
The Chiefs have played at Arrowhead Stadium since 1972, and their lease with Jackson County, Missouri runs through the end of the 2031 season.

The new stadium site being discussed is roughly 25 miles west of Arrowhead, near the Kansas Speedway and The Legends entertainment district.
The franchise previously leaned toward an $800 million renovation plan for Arrowhead, but Missouri voters rejected a related funding proposal last May. The AP noted that Hunt has long favored remaining in Missouri — a place tied closely to his late father, Lamar Hunt, and to the team’s history.
A move to Kansas could carry major economic consequences for Missouri, which is also trying to keep Kauffman Stadium — home of the Kansas City Royals — located next door to Arrowhead.

The current area around both venues, southeast of downtown Kansas City, has limited nearby development. Over time, that has helped cement the tailgating culture — but it has also kept the surrounding district from becoming much of a year-round destination. Meanwhile, concerns about Arrowhead’s aging amenities have surfaced repeatedly, including last year when quarterback Patrick Mahomes criticized the stadium’s air-conditioning.
The Royals are also exploring options for a new stadium, though the AP reported that a potential Kansas move for the team was not discussed during Monday’s session.
