Work friendships often thrive on shared interests and long hours spent side by side — but even the strongest ones can fracture when honesty hits too close to home.

A 20-year-old woman recently sparked debate in her office after she made a blunt remark about her co-worker’s divorce.

She had worked with the 40-year-old man since she was 16, calling him her “closest work friend.” They bonded over a shared passion for video games, especially Final Fantasy XIV, which he played and discussed endlessly.

“He talked about this game and the people he would hang out with in the game constantly, talking about the hours he spends playing it every day,” she wrote in her Reddit post.

Over time, their friendship grew, and she became one of the first to know about his engagement following a ten-year relationship — and later, about his divorce, just a year after the wedding.

After the marriage, she noticed a shift. “He started complaining about [his wife] and her neediness,” she recalled. When she gently suggested he spend more time with his wife instead of gaming, her advice went unheard.

Despite her repeated efforts to help him see his partner’s perspective, the complaints kept coming. Eventually, she asked him to stop discussing his marriage altogether.

Two months later, he told her his wife had filed for divorce.

In a moment she admitted was harsh but honest, she told him, “I’m not surprised she’s divorcing you — it sounds like you love Final Fantasy more than her.” She pointed out that every conversation about his wife had been negative and that gaming seemed to consume most of his time.

Her co-worker was visibly upset and soon shared his frustration with others in the office — including their boss. While management chose not to intervene, her comment caused a clear split within the small team of ten employees.

“Some of my coworkers around my age took my side, while the older ones took his,” she explained.

Now, the once-close friendship has dissolved into awkward silence, leaving the young woman wondering whether her honesty was justified — or if she simply went too far.
