Man’s Girlfriend Claims He Ruined Her Birthday Breakfast by Substituting 1 Ingredient

A man turned to Reddit for advice after a birthday gesture for his girlfriend went sideways, leaving them in an argument instead of a celebration.

In his post, he explained that his girlfriend has always been a very picky eater. She’ll sample new foods, but, as he put it, “if it doesn’t blow her mind or make her happy/excited to eat it then she won’t finish it.” Early on, that created some friction, but over time he says he “adjusted to her palate” and learned which dishes she really enjoys.

For her birthday, he decided to start the day with breakfast in bed. He made breakfast burritos filled with eggs, hash browns, sausage and bacon — a meal he noted she often calls “one of her favorite things I make for her.” Confident it would make her feel special, he got to work in the kitchen.

Halfway through cooking, he realized there was a problem: they were out of her preferred whole milk and only had 2% in the fridge. Wanting to keep the surprise going and not disappear for half an hour to buy more, he decided to use what he had, saying he “just used 2% because I couldn’t stop halfway through to run out for 30 minutes to get milk.” He assumed the small swap wouldn’t make much difference.

He set the scene with candles and their favorite show and brought her the plate. At first she looked excited, but that changed when she examined the food and asked, “Did you have to run out and get whole milk?” When he admitted he hadn’t and had used 2% instead, she “started tearing up because she couldn’t eat anything with the eggs in it then.”

She told him she had tried eggs made with 2% milk as a child, didn’t like them, and now couldn’t bring herself to eat them. Despite his urging and his attempt not to “start her bday off on a bad note,” she refused to try even one bite of the eggs and only ate the side items. He tried to let it go and focus on “keeping her happy for the rest of her bday,” and says the rest of the day was fine — until a comment later that evening.

After dinner at her parents’ house, as they were heading out, she turned to her father and said, “Thank you dad for cooking dinner, because I need at least one guy in my life that knows how to cook good food.” According to the boyfriend, “the tone was not playful,” and she “was staring straight at me with a serious face” while saying it. The remark left him embarrassed and hurt.

That comment sparked a fight in the car on the way home, and they barely spoke for the rest of the night. He later wrote that he felt awful arguing on her birthday, but also didn’t believe he had truly done anything wrong. “I made a mistake with the eggs,” he admitted, but felt she had overreacted and crossed a line by publicly insulting his cooking.

Reddit commenters overwhelmingly sided with him. One wrote, “NTA. She sounds incredibly childish and coddled. I’d be so appreciative if my SO went through this much effort for my birthday.”

Another agreed, saying, “You’re NTA but your girlfriend is. If she didn’t want to try the eggs okay, that’s her choice. But the dig she directed towards you about cooking was uncalled for.”
