Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will step down from her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives next year, announcing a surprise resignation in a video posted to her X account on Friday, Nov. 21.

The Georgia Republican, who represents the state’s 14th congressional district, said her resignation will take effect on January 5, 2026. In the video, Greene blamed what she described as entrenched gridlock and escalating partisanship for blocking her legislative priorities.

She also accused members of her own party of treating her unfairly, and said she refuses to continue defending President Donald Trump after what she characterized as a sustained political campaign against her.

“I have too much self respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” Greene said. “And in turn, be expected to defend the President against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me. It’s all so absurd and completely unserious. I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”

Greene did not explain why she believes Trump may face impeachment proceedings.

In the same statement, she criticized fellow Republicans for their role in what she called the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, while highlighting her conservative record on gun rights, abortion, border security, and what she referred to as “COVID tyrannical insanity.”

Her resignation comes one week after Trump publicly withdrew his endorsement of Greene, describing her as a “ranting lunatic.”

The split between Greene and Trump has been building for months. In June, she broke with her party to oppose artificial intelligence provisions in Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” and acknowledged she had not read the full legislation. She also condemned Trump’s decision that month to bomb three Iranian nuclear sites.

“I’m sick of funding foreign aid and foreign countries and foreign everything,” Greene wrote in a statement to her X account on June 22. “I want to fund American interests and issues.”

Greene has also been a vocal proponent of releasing the Epstein files, despite Trump’s earlier opposition to making the documents public. On Nov. 19, Trump said he had signed legislation ordering their release, though no timeline has been announced.
