A 37-year-old man died after falling while hiking in Washington state.
The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office identified him as Andrew Wong, a resident of New York. He was supposed to return home on September 7 but never arrived.
Wong was believed to be hiking in the Dragontail Peak area of the Enchantments. Deputies found his vehicle at a local trailhead and called the Chelan County Mountain Rescue team to help with a search.
“Due to the challenging terrain, a request was made for a hoist-capable helicopter to transport search teams to the area and assist in a needed rescue,” the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.
“Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office responded to the request and flew CCMR personnel into the Dragontail Peak region, where they began an extensive search of the hazardous terrain,” the statement continued.
During their search, the team found Wong, and his injuries were consistent with a fall.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the individual during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said. “We are also grateful for the coordinated efforts of our Mountain Rescue Team and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office for their quick response and support in this challenging recovery.”
There have been more than 30 rescues in the Enchantments area so far this year, NBC affiliate KING5 reported.
The highest point of Dragontail Peak in the central Cascades reaches 8,840 feet. The hike itself is about 13.5 miles roundtrip with 5,833 feet of elevation gain, according to the Washington Trails Association.
