Authorities in Florida have issued an arrest warrant for a man months after his missing sister-in-law was found dead.

The victim, Monica Islam, disappeared briefly from Eustis, Florida, before her body was discovered at an intersection in nearby Mount Dora on May 2, according to Click Orlando, FOX 35, and WESH. Lake County authorities confirmed her death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that an arrest warrant has been issued for her brother-in-law, Shahidul Islam. Shahidul has been in immigration custody since May 6 and will be moved to Lake County once those proceedings are resolved, officials said.

Monica, 44, was last seen leaving the Shell gas station where she worked as a cashier, Click Orlando and FOX 35 reported. Her daughter, Rimi Islam, said at the time that Monica didn’t have conflicts with anyone, according to FOX 35.

Investigators later said the case revealed Monica’s husband, Rashedul Islam, and his brother Shahidul Islam were involved in a domestic violence incident with her in December 2024, FOX 35 and WESH reported. Authorities said Shahidul hit Monica, stole her jewelry and property documents from Bangladesh, and even pointed a gun at her.

Rashedul allegedly fled the U.S. before a warrant for his arrest could be issued.

Shahidul, who had been deported in the past, was arrested on May 6 in New York by the U.S. Marshals Service. He is expected to be extradited to Lake County once his immigration case is resolved.
