An 11-year-old girl is being praised for her bravery after helping save her mom’s life during a medical emergency on a Texas highway.
Jenna Lester was driving near the Boerne Stage Road exit off Interstate 10 in San Antonio in August when she started experiencing worrying symptoms, including tremors, heart palpitations, and blurry vision, according to ABC affiliate KSAT-TV.
Jenna pulled over and asked her daughter, Krista, to call 911. While Krista was on the phone with a dispatcher, her mom had a seizure in the car and briefly passed out.
During the seizure, Krista noticed her mom’s foot “was by the pedal” and told her to move it. Then, she said, “the car just started rolling, so I had to put it in park.”
Krista stayed on the line and gave emergency services all the information they needed. Shortly after, first responders from San Antonio Fire Station 47 arrived at the scene.
Lieutenant Kevin Zigmond, one of the first responders, praised Krista for her quick thinking. “She just did amazing,” he said. “I couldn’t believe an 11-year-old was that poised.”
Jenna has since recovered from her medical emergency. She and Krista reunited with the firefighters who responded to their emergency on Wednesday, Sept. 17, according to KSAT.
Krista even received a special gift for her bravery — a succulent Lego set.
Jenna is also thankful for the extra help the first responders gave that day, from moving the family’s truck off the exit ramp to arranging for someone to check on her son, Kaleb, who was home at the time.
“I couldn’t believe they took care of all of that,” the mom said. “Thank you is not enough. I don’t know if there are words, I’m just so grateful.”
