A mother has sparked debate online after criticizing a restaurant for placing her family in a designated children’s area — even though she was dining with her 14-month-old daughter.
Posting on the U.K. forum Mumsnet, she explained that she, her husband and their toddler were shown to a specific family section of the restaurant, which she felt ruined the experience.
“Despite there being a lot of seats spare in every area, we were told we had to be seated in the dedicated children’s area,” she wrote.
Once seated, she said the noise level made the meal unpleasant, describing the other children as making an “absolute racket.”
She then asked fellow users if she was being “ridiculous” for feeling annoyed — and most respondents said she was.

One commenter without children wrote, “Sounds like a great idea to me, and I wish more restaurants would do it. Why should I be subjected to an absolute racket?”
Another user agreed that the setup was practical for everyone: “It makes sense to seat all families with children in that area. It keeps the adult-only areas quieter and keeps mess/spillages more contained as well.”
A fellow parent also supported the restaurant’s approach, sharing that separation can actually be a relief.
“This sounds great to me, and I have an 18-month-old,” she said. “I don’t have to worry about him disrupting anyone else’s meal when he decides he doesn’t want to sit nicely in the highchair.”
Another person suggested that the restaurant was simply trying to keep as many customers content as possible by organizing seating this way.
“Personally, I think it’s fine to allocate an area to groups eating with young children, with facilities that appeal to many of them,” the commenter wrote, suggesting the policy was a reasonable compromise between families and adults dining without kids.
