A 28-year-old mom-to-be says her mother-in-law wants to stay in the baby’s nursery during an upcoming visit — and she’s not comfortable with it.
Posting anonymously on Reddit, the woman explained, “My husband and I just set up a nursery for our first baby, due next month.”
Because the couple doesn’t have a guest room, visitors typically either book a hotel or sleep on an air mattress in the living room. “His mom asked if she could come visit next weekend. I said sure, but when I reminded her she’d be on the air mattress, she seemed offended,” the poster wrote.
The mother-in-law later texted: “Can’t I just stay in the baby’s room? He’s not even here yet.”
The woman says she refused, explaining that the nursery was fully prepared, she wanted to keep it clean and ready, and she felt uncomfortable having someone sleep there. According to her, her mother-in-law became “snippy,” accusing her of being uptight and treating her like an outsider. The woman’s husband has tried to stay neutral but suggested they might have allowed it.
Unsure if she was overreacting, the woman asked Reddit users for their thoughts.
Many commenters sided with the mother-in-law. One person wrote: “I don’t see how an air mattress and her suitcase are going to mess up the nursery. Once she’s gone, so are those things. Where do you expect her to change clothes? Talk on the phone? Have downtime? Your baby will likely spend the first few months in your room, and it’ll be months before they can ‘play’ with anything in there.”
Another added: “The nursery will barely be used for anything but sleeping and diaper changes until your baby is closer to three. Your living room, on the other hand, will end up looking like a ransacked baby store. Sounds like there may be other issues with your MIL, and you’re using this as an excuse to take a jab at her.”
