A woman from North Carolina is facing criminal charges after police say she fired a gun into the air at a crowded back-to-school event to stop a fight, causing panic among students and parents.
Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Cherez Davis of Charlotte. She was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 9, and charged with carrying a hidden weapon and going armed to the terror of the public. Jail records show she was released on a $50,000 bond.
The incident happened at the 11th annual Back-to-School Health Fair at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center in Charlotte. The event provides low-cost physicals, free immunizations, and school supplies for students.
According to police, Davis said her son and another boy started arguing during the event. When another adult stepped in and made things worse, Davis pulled a Taurus G6 handgun from her backpack and fired two shots into the air to break up the fight.
The gunfire caused chaos, with more than 100 children and adults running away in fear. Police say Davis then put the gun back into her backpack and started walking away.
Officers arrested her shortly after arriving at the scene. No one was hurt.
Davis is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 9. Her public defender has not commented on the case.
