A new mother has revealed that she’s struggling with “strong baby name regret” just months after welcoming her child.
Posting on the community forum Mumsnet, the woman explained that she and her husband couldn’t agree on a name for their newborn. In the end, they reached what she called a “middle ground,” choosing a name “neither of us loved.”
“The first name has never quite sat perfectly with me,” she admitted. “It’s quite uncommon and is often met with surprise or questioning.”
Now, six months later, she still feels uneasy about the choice.
“I feel like after six months the name should fit — and it just doesn’t,” she shared, without revealing the actual name. “Every time I say it or hear someone say it, it makes me feel almost a little uncomfortable.”

The mother went on to say she worries she’ll “regret this name forever,” and confessed she’d prefer to change it to her baby’s middle name, though she’s concerned about what others might think. “I’m worried about judgement [from other people],” she wrote.
Seeking reassurance, she turned to other Mumsnet users for advice on whether wanting to change her child’s name was unreasonable.
One commenter encouraged her to follow her instincts: “You’ve thought about it soundly, so just go ahead and change her name to her second name, as long as Dad agrees.”
Another shared a similar experience: “I changed my son’s name at around 6 months to his middle name and just switched it around. It was absolutely fine.”
