CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a mother was arrested after firing a gun at a Charlotte back-to-school event on Saturday afternoon to stop a fight.

According to court records, 34-year-old Cherez Davis was released from jail on a $50,000 bond. She is facing charges of going armed to the terror of the people and carrying a concealed firearm.

What Happened

The incident happened around 1:10 p.m. on August 9 at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center during its annual back-to-school fair on Wilkinson Boulevard.

Court documents say Davis admitted to firing two shots into the air to break up an argument between her son and another boy. She told police that another adult stepped into the argument, which led her to grab a Taurus G6 handgun from her backpack and fire the shots.

Witnesses said the gunfire caused more than 100 people to run in panic. No one was hurt.

Arrest

Police said witnesses described the shooter as a woman with braids wearing a black shirt, jeans, and Crocs. Officers quickly found Davis nearby, arrested her, and recovered the gun as evidence.

Health Center’s Statement

The C.W. Williams Community Health Center called the shooting an “isolated incident” that happened near the end of the event.

The organization said thousands of families had enjoyed free healthcare, school supplies, and food earlier that day, and many local officials attended. They thanked police for their quick response and stressed that the day should be remembered for the positive impact on the community, not the brief moment of violence.
