John Garris, a longtime college softball coach, has died in a single-car accident at the age of 63.

John was the head softball coach and compliance director at Bay College. He started working there in August 2024. Bay College’s Athletic Director, Matt Johnson, shared his sadness about the loss.

“Bay College and Norse Athletics are very sorry to hear about Coach Garris’s sudden death,” Johnson said. “Even though he was here for a short time, he showed a lot of passion for softball and life. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

The school also expressed how much they will miss him.

“Coach Garris was a big part of Bay College,” said Bay College President Dr. Nerita Hughes. “He brought pride, energy, and enthusiasm to our campus and athletic department. He cared deeply about student success and always went the extra mile to support and encourage students. His warm smile and unique Southern accent will be missed by everyone.”

The cause of the accident has not been announced.

“It happened last Friday,” Dr. Hughes added. “Coach Garris was very loved. He was about to reach his one-year anniversary here. He was from Alabama and had a southern drawl that everyone enjoyed. His focus was always on the students. This is a great loss for us.”

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.
