Engagements are usually the kind of news that brings everyone together. But for one bride-to-be, the excitement got sidelined fast—thanks to a sister who felt personally wronged by the way the proposal happened.

In a post on Reddit, the woman shared that her partner recently proposed. Instead of celebrating, her younger sister “flipped out” because the fiancé didn’t ask for “permission from the family.” Not the parents—her.

According to the bride, her sister insisted the proposal “robbed her of a big emotional moment,” then started telling others the engagement now feels “tainted.” On top of that, she began privately messaging her TikToks about “sibling respect,” which the bride joked made it feel like her marriage was being treated “like a monarchy.”

In the comments, the poster added that her 29-year-old sister didn’t stop there—she also sent long voice notes arguing that “tradition was violated.” The bride, who is 32, said she felt her sister was acting as if proposals follow some scripted ceremony, when in reality that’s not how it works for most couples.

Readers in the comments were equally confused. Many pointed out that—when permission is involved at all—it’s traditionally associated with asking a bride’s parents in some cultures, not siblings. Several commenters questioned why a younger sister would think she should have that role, and others joked about how unrealistic it would be if every sibling got a vote.

Some also warned the bride to be prepared, suggesting the sister’s behavior might escalate into future wedding-related drama.
