Nicole Kidman was not ready to walk away from her marriage to Keith Urban before the couple announced their separation.
“She didn’t want this,” a source told PEOPLE. “She has been fighting to save the marriage.”
The couple’s breakup was confirmed on Sept. 29 after 19 years together. TMZ was first to report the news. Representatives for both Kidman and Urban did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Kidman, 58, and Urban, 57, married in June 2006 and share two daughters — Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
According to the source, “Nicole’s sister [Antonia] has been a rock and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another” during the separation.
Kidman recently finished filming Practical Magic 2 in London and, on Aug. 19, posted “summer memories” on Instagram, highlighting time with her daughters and extended family.
Urban has remained focused on his music, continuing his tour with a scheduled stop on Thursday, Oct. 2, in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
In June, Kidman celebrated the couple’s 19th wedding anniversary with a black-and-white photo on Instagram, captioning it: “Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban.”
In a December 2024 interview with PEOPLE, Kidman also shared her love for date nights with Urban — especially when he planned them as a surprise.
“I like being asked out, which he still does,” she said at the time. “Seven nights ago we went to dinner in New York. We love Japanese food, but I’m open [to everything]. I like not knowing where he’s going to take me. Surprise me, baby!”
