Olivia Munn opened up about an intimate and emotional moment with her husband, John Mulaney, just before undergoing a double mastectomy for breast cancer in May 2023.
The Your Friends & Neighbors star shared the heartfelt video on Instagram to mark World Breast Cancer Research Day on Monday, Aug. 18. In the clip, Munn, 45, is seen in her hospital bed, hooked up to monitors and wearing a hairnet, while the Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney host, 42, sits beside her wearing a surgical mask and holding her hands.
At one point, Munn gently touches Mulaney’s cheek, and they press their foreheads together, speaking softly as the sounds of the hospital surround them. In her caption, she explained that the video was filmed “right before I was wheeled in for my double mastectomy, the first of 5 surgeries I would have in a determined [battle] to beat breast cancer.”
Munn’s treatment journey included not only a mastectomy and reconstruction for bilateral breast cancer but also a lymph node dissection and a hysterectomy. In July—two years after her initial diagnosis—she revealed that her mother had also been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“My breast cancer and my mother’s breast cancer are both very aggressive, fast-moving cancers,” Munn shared. “And because of funding for breast cancer research we both had a path to survival.”
She highlighted endocrine therapy, a hormone treatment discovered only 20 years ago, which prevents hormones from reaching cancer cells. “It’s a treatment plan I’m currently on,” Munn noted.
“Because of funding for breast cancer research, there are treatment plans that give me and so many others hope. Funding is still desperately needed to help find cures, perfect the treatments and most importantly determine which patients need them,” she continued.
Munn encouraged her followers to contribute to breast cancer research, emphasizing that “You’re directly contributing to saving countless women’s lives.” She highlighted Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Society as organizations making a tangible impact.

She concluded with a message of support for anyone affected by cancer: “I stand side by side with you and wishing you luck and strength every step of the way. 🤍”
Munn also urged women to take the “quick and free lifetime risk assessment test that saved my life.” After discovering she had a 37% chance of breast cancer, further testing confirmed she had an aggressive form of the disease.

“Every woman over 30 should take this test and know their score,” she wrote. “Anything above 20% is considered high risk, and you should implore your doctor to order a breast MRI for you. 🙏🏻💝”
