Police Identify Shooting Suspect Who Opened Fire at Texas Target, Killing 3 — Including a Child

Authorities in Texas have identified the man accused of killing three people, including a child, outside a Target store in Austin.

Police say 32-year-old Ethan Nieneker was arrested Monday, Aug. 11, after allegedly fleeing the scene in a stolen car.

According to court records cited by KFOX TV, Nieneker faces multiple charges, including capital murder by terror threat, capital murder of a child under 10, and first-degree murder.

The victims’ names have not been released.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said Nieneker has a history of mental health problems and past violent behavior, including incidents involving family members. Court records also show he has made troubling online posts, including remarks about Native Americans and comments about feeling targeted as a “straight, white” man.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
