Two officers responding to what was later determined to be a domestic violence call in Utah were fatally shot over the weekend.

Authorities confirmed that a man was taken into custody following the Sunday, Aug. 17 incident, the Brigham City Police Department said in a statement.

The slain officers have been identified as Sergeant Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada, the Tremonton Garland Police Department announced.

Police have not officially named the suspect, but FOX 13, KJZZ, and KUTV identified him as Ryan Michael Bate.

According to officials, the violence began after Tremonton police received “multiple 911 hangup calls.” A single officer from the Tremonton Garland Police Department responded to the residence. It is not yet clear whether Sergeant Sorensen or Officer Estrada was the first to arrive.

While speaking with a resident reporting a domestic disturbance, the responding officer was shot by the suspect, according to the police statement.

Police Chief Chad Reyes of nearby Brigham City told the Associated Press that the alleged shooter is believed to be a resident of the home.

A second Tremonton Garland officer responded shortly after and was also fired upon by the same suspect. The timing between the two shootings has not been confirmed.

A deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office who arrived to assist was shot when the suspect fired multiple rounds into his vehicle, injuring both the deputy and his police service dog. Both were hospitalized and are recovering in “fair condition.”

Bystanders eventually convinced the suspect to surrender his weapon, and he was taken into custody by additional responding officers.

He faces charges of capital aggravated murder, first-degree felony attempted aggravated murder, and misdemeanor assault, according to KSLTV, KUTV, and FOX 13, citing an affidavit and booking records. Plea and attorney information for Bate are not yet available.
