Actor Morgan Freeman delivered a blistering rebuke of President Donald Trump on Saturday, blasting the president’s threatened tariffs targeting European allies amid the escalating dispute over Greenland. Freeman called the move “ridiculous,” pointing to mounting public outrage and demonstrations abroad.

“The idiot is placing tariffs on our closest allies. Someone has to give him back his binky before it’s too late!” Freeman said.

Freeman also highlighted the growing protests in Denmark and Greenland, framing the backlash as a direct response to what he described as Trump’s expansionist posture.

“A massive protest is currently underway in Denmark — they are protesting Trump’s ridiculous ambitions to take Greenland,” he said, referring to demonstrations that have drawn thousands into the streets.

The remarks come as international criticism intensifies following Trump’s Jan. 17 announcement that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland would face new tariffs beginning Feb. 1 unless Greenland is ceded to the United States. Trump argued the Arctic island’s strategic position and mineral resources are essential to U.S. and global security.

European leaders have pushed back hard. French President Emmanuel Macron labeled the tariffs “unacceptable,” while Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and U.K. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that Greenland’s sovereignty rests with Denmark—and that Arctic security remains a shared NATO responsibility. The European Commission also reiterated that territorial integrity and sovereignty are core principles of international law.

Protests have surged in response. On Jan. 17, thousands marched in Nuuk, Greenland, and Copenhagen, Denmark, carrying banners reading “Greenland is not for sale” and chanting against U.S. interference. Organizers said the demonstrations were intended to defend Greenlanders’ right to decide their own future.

Freeman’s comments quickly spread online, reflecting a rising wave of public—and celebrity—criticism of Trump’s confrontational approach toward European allies and Greenland, the self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
