Dealing with the death of a loved one can be one of life’s most painful experiences — especially when guilt and distance make the loss even harder to bear.

For many, grief brings with it a longing for reassurance — a sign that their loved one is at peace. One recent Reddit post captured how such moments can bring unexpected comfort and ease the weight of sorrow.

In the post, a woman shared how she lost her great-grandmother when she was 22. She described her as “the toughest lady to exist” — a Polish woman born in 1922 who survived the hardships of World War II, raised two children alone after losing her husband, and eventually became “the de facto matriarch of our family.”

Despite her great-grandmother’s remarkable strength, the poster carried a deep sense of guilt for not being there when she passed away. “She passed away… surrounded by my whole family, except me (as I lived overseas). And the guilt ate me up inside for years,” she wrote.

Years later, during a particularly difficult stretch in her academic life, she found herself overwhelmed by those feelings again. “I BEGGED for a sign that she was alright, that she was happy wherever she is,” she recalled.

The very next day, something happened that she couldn’t easily explain. While taking an online course, she saw a comment appear from someone using her great-grandmother’s exact name — a common name in Poland, she admitted, but the coincidence felt uncanny.

“Seeing her name show up the day after asking for any sign was like a boon from God,” she wrote.

That moment, though small, lifted years of guilt and brought her comfort. She felt reassured that her great-grandmother’s spirit was still nearby, watching over her.

In closing, the Reddit user reflected: “Yes, I believe that once someone passes, they’re still around in spirit, looking after you, making sure you’re alright.”
