St. Louis County Police are searching for a suspect who opened fire at a Steak ’n Shake drive-thru Wednesday night, killing a 32-year-old employee and wounding another following a verbal “confrontation.”
The victim, identified as Chauncia La’Shell Meekins, was pronounced dead at the restaurant on Bellefontaine Road after an unidentified driver fired a weapon through the service window at approximately 11:35 p.m. A male coworker, whose identity remains withheld, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigative reports indicate the shooting was sparked by a dispute at the drive-thru window. While authorities have not officially confirmed the specific cause of the argument, the victim’s family suggests the violence was triggered by a trivial order error.
“Instead of celebrating her birthday, I will be burying my daughter for some senseless act over some onion rings,” the victim’s mother, Tamela Washington, told KMOV.

Meekins, described by her family as a hardworking and “bright” individual, had been employed at the fast-food chain for only three months. She was scheduled to celebrate her 33rd birthday on April 23.
The St. Louis County Police Department confirmed on Friday that the investigation remains active. As of this report, no suspects are in custody, and detectives have not yet released a description of the shooter or the vehicle involved.
The incident highlights a disturbing trend of escalating workplace violence within the service industry. Law enforcement officials are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the scene and surrounding businesses to identify the perpetrator.
“Why would somebody want to shoot somebody in a fast-food restaurant over some fast food?” Washington said during a vigil at the site. “It was senseless, and it was hurtful.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the shooting or the suspect’s whereabouts to contact the St. Louis County Police Department or provide an anonymous tip through CrimeStoppers.
The restaurant remained closed on Thursday as investigators processed the scene. An obituary for Meekins noted that she will be remembered for her vibrant presence and the profound impact she had on her community.
