PONTIAC, Mich. — The Pontiac School District has terminated a high school teacher after several viral videos captured her using profanity and engaging in a heated verbal altercation with students. The incident, which surfaced on social media Tuesday, March 3, has sparked intense local debate over classroom safety, administrative accountability, and the systemic challenges facing the district’s educators.

The footage, recorded at Pontiac High School, depicts an adult educator shouting at a male student, using expletives and telling him to “calm down.” In a second clip, the teacher is seen on a phone call claiming a student was summoning their parent to “beat my a—.” The district moved quickly to sever ties with the individual, confirming by Tuesday evening that the employee “no longer works for the district.”

Immediate District Response and Staffing Volatility

School officials addressed the controversy shortly after the videos began circulating, distancing the institution from the behavior displayed in the recordings.

“This behavior does not reflect our values or the standards we expect from our staff,” the Pontiac School District said in a formal statement. “The matter was addressed promptly… the wellbeing of our students remains our highest priority.”

Investigation into the teacher’s background reveals a precarious staffing situation at the high school. According to Kayla Burns, a parent of a student present during the incident, the teacher had been in the classroom for only two days. She was reportedly a substitute for another educator who was already on administrative leave for undisclosed reasons.

“How are you going to expect children to conduct themselves in a mature or adult manner… when adults cannot?” Burns told local outlets, noting that she and her son have faced threats since speaking out.

Union Blames Systemic Neglect for Classroom Breakdown

While the Pontiac Education Association (PEA), the local teachers’ union, condemned the teacher’s conduct as “unacceptable,” they also framed the outburst as a symptom of a deeper institutional crisis.

In a statement released Wednesday, March 4, the union argued that the incident highlights the district’s failure to retain experienced educators through competitive pay and support systems.

Key Union Demands Included:

  • Fair Wages: To attract and retain veteran teachers capable of managing high-stress environments.
  • Support Systems: Increased investment in student and educator resources to prevent burnout.
  • Leadership Accountability: Addressing years of alleged neglect that the union claims led to this flashpoint.

“They deserved better in that moment,” the PEA stated, referring to the students. “But this is a symptom of what happens when a school district neglects its educators year after year.”

Community Calls for Leadership Overhaul

The fallout has extended beyond the classroom and into the broader community. Advocate Marcus Kelley described the atmosphere within the district as restrictive, suggesting students are often treated “like prisoners” rather than learners.

Kelley joined several parents in calling for a “leadership change,” suggesting that the removal of a single teacher does not address the underlying culture at Pontiac High School. As of Friday, the district has not released the identity of the teacher involved or detailed specific plans to prevent similar incidents.

The school board is expected to address parental concerns regarding instructional continuity and safety protocols at its next scheduled meeting.
