Golf legend Tiger Woods announced Tuesday that he will take an indefinite leave of absence from the PGA Tour to seek professional treatment following a DUI arrest and a rollover vehicle pursuit in Martin County.

The 50-year-old athlete, who recently returned to competition after a year-long hiatus due to injuries, confirmed his decision via a statement on X, citing a need to prioritize his “well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”

“I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health,” Woods stated. “I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally.”

The arrest occurred Friday, March 27, following a rollover collision involving Woods’ Land Rover. According to Martin County Sheriff John M. Budensiek, the vehicle overturned after Woods attempted to overtake a pressure-cleaning truck pulling a trailer.

While Woods “blew triple zeros” on a breathalyzer test—indicating no alcohol was in his system—deputies described the golfer as “lethargic” at the scene. Investigative reports and a police affidavit obtained Tuesday reveal that deputies discovered two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ left pants pocket. Woods reportedly refused a urinalysis at the jail following the crash.

Court documents show that Woods entered a not guilty plea in Martin County Court on March 31. By filing the plea, Woods waived his formal arraignment and has requested a trial by jury.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that neither Woods nor the driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries in the Friday crash. Woods was released from the Martin County Jail the same day after posting bond.

This latest incident marks the third major vehicle-related investigation involving the 15-time major champion. Woods suffered career-threatening leg injuries in a 2021 solo crash in Los Angeles and was involved in a high-profile accident near his Florida home in 2009.

Sources close to the family indicate that Woods’ ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, remains “concerned” for his health, particularly regarding the impact on their children, Sam, 18, and Charlie, 17.

“She wants him to be well,” a source noted, adding that the physical toll of his 2021 recovery was “brutal.”

Woods has asked for privacy for his family as he begins this undisclosed treatment program. No timeline has been established for his return to professional golf.
