President Donald Trump has renewed his offensive against California Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing the Democrat of mismanaging everything from wildfires to immigration and education, while advancing what the Trump administration calls “radical left-wing policies.”
In a Truth Social post days after his 2024 election victory, Trump wrote, “Governor Gavin Newscum is trying to KILL our Nation’s beautiful California… He’s using the term ‘Trump-Proof’ to block progress.” The post referred to Newsom’s efforts to insulate the state from federal directives.
California’s sanctuary policies, environmental rules, and stance on immigration have long clashed with Trump’s agenda. The tensions reignited following devastating wildfires in early 2025. Trump blamed Newsom for refusing to approve a “water restoration declaration” that he claimed would have redirected excess water to wildfire-prone areas. Newsom’s office dismissed the claim, saying no such declaration existed and accusing Trump of “playing politics.”
Trump signed an executive order on day one of his second term titled “Putting People over Fish,” directing water from Northern California to drought-stricken areas. He later posted: “Too bad they refused to do this during my First Term—There would have been no fires!”
Amid June immigration raids in Los Angeles, anti-ICE riots erupted. Trump bypassed Newsom and deployed 2,000 National Guard troops, prompting California to sue the federal government for “unlawfully federalizing” the Guard. Trump responded by calling the chaos “insurrection” and accused Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass of enabling lawlessness.
Tensions deepened as Trump’s DOJ sued Los Angeles over sanctuary policies and filed a broader lawsuit aimed at cutting federal funds to cities that don’t comply with federal immigration law. Attorney General Pam Bondi said sanctuary policies were responsible for “violence and attacks on law enforcement.”
Newsom also slammed Trump over reports the administration may revoke national monument status from two protected areas in the state. “Grow up,” Newsom posted on X, calling it part of Trump’s “war on California.”
Trump’s administration has also moved to dismantle California’s environmental regulations, signing resolutions to kill the state’s electric vehicle mandates. “California can’t even keep the lights on,” Trump said. “These bans are insane.”
In response, Newsom announced the state would sue to block the rollbacks, calling the effort “an all-out assault on California’s clean air and global competitiveness.”
On education, the Trump DOJ launched an investigation into the state’s handling of transgender athletes in girls’ sports, citing Title IX violations. The administration also gave California a 60-day ultimatum to strip references to gender identity from its federally funded sex ed programs or risk losing funding.
“Federal funds should not be used to indoctrinate children,” said Andrew Gradison, acting head of the Administration for Children and Families.
California officials defended their policies, saying they’re committed to protecting all students from discrimination.
Meanwhile, Trump ordered an audit of California’s troubled high-speed rail project, which is over budget and years behind schedule. “It’s out of control,” Trump said, criticizing the $106 billion cost and limited progress.
As the feud between Trump and Newsom intensifies, the governor’s office maintains the state will “step up” despite headwinds from Washington. “We’ve got to be more intentional,” Newsom said in a press conference, defending his administration’s economic and climate initiatives.
