Donald Trump is drawing backlash after suggesting that his proposed White House ballroom could be used for future presidential inaugurations — a decision critics note would not be his alone to make.

In a Feb. 10 post on Truth Social, Trump shared renderings of the planned grand ballroom and said the project was “on budget and ahead of schedule,” even though the renovation plans for the East Wing remain unapproved and are currently tied up in court.

“When completed, it will be the finest Ballroom ever built anywhere in the World, one that has been sought by Presidents for over 150 years — and now they are getting THE BEST!” Trump wrote. He added that, because of its “structural, safety, and security features,” it would “also be used for future Presidential Inaugurations.”

The claim quickly drew criticism online, with some users arguing Trump was disregarding long-standing tradition and the symbolism of the U.S. Capitol as the setting for inaugurations. Others questioned how he could promise future presidents would choose that location at all, and suggested moving the ceremony indoors would limit public access.

Presidential inaugurations have historically been held at the U.S. Capitol. While the Constitution lays out the presidential oath of office, it does not specify where the ceremony must take place — leaving the location largely governed by tradition and logistical planning.

Meanwhile, the ballroom project itself faces legal uncertainty. In December, the National Trust for Historic Preservation filed a lawsuit challenging the proposed East Wing demolition tied to the plan, arguing it would violate preservation requirements. The organization is asking a federal court to pause any construction until the necessary legal reviews — including a public comment period — are completed.
