President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Canada on Wednesday night, threatening trade repercussions if Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney follows through on plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!”
Trump’s comments came shortly after reports that Canada would join France and the United Kingdom in formally recognizing Palestinian statehood—a move made despite the ongoing war triggered by Hamas, the continued captivity of 50 Israeli hostages (20 reportedly still alive), and the lack of clear borders or a stable governing authority for a prospective Palestinian state.
Critics, including Trump, have argued that supporting Palestinian statehood amid such instability amounts to rewarding terrorism. Trump has consistently opposed the idea, calling it a “reward for Hamas,” a view echoed by families of Israeli hostages who say it encourages further violence.
Until now, Trump had refrained from targeting allied nations for recognizing a Palestinian state. But Wednesday’s remarks suggest the administration is now taking a tougher stance, particularly as Canada and the U.S. remain locked in sensitive trade negotiations ahead of an August 1 tariff deadline.
Carney’s decision to endorse statehood, despite the diplomatic risks, is seen by some as an attempt to appease Canada’s vocal anti-Israel factions. Trump’s warning now puts added pressure on Ottawa as trade talks continue amid rising political tensions.
