A 17-year-old high school student says she’s feeling frustrated after her mother designed an outfit for her upcoming school dance without consulting her first.

In a post shared on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the teen explained that her mom created the design herself, leaving the girl unsure how to admit she doesn’t want to wear it.

The student said she spent nearly two months browsing dresses online and showing her favorites to her mother, telling her how much she loved them and hoping they would eventually go shopping together.

Instead, weeks later, her mom surprised her with AI-generated images of an outfit she had designed: an asymmetrical suit jacket paired with a tulle skirt. The teen admitted the look “just wasn’t my style.”

“When I saw the dress, I honestly didn’t like it at all,” she wrote, adding that the outfit felt more like something her mother would wear rather than something that reflected her own taste.

For context, the teen explained that she had worn a suit to her graduation ceremony earlier in September and felt confident and comfortable in it. Her mother, she said, repeatedly complimented her that night.

“I think she saw me wearing a suit to graduation and assumed I’d want something more masculine for my formal without asking,” the girl said.

Despite her disappointment, the teen said she hasn’t told her mom how she feels because she doesn’t want to hurt her feelings.

“I’m frustrated because it feels like she’s projecting her own taste onto me without recognizing that I’m my own person,” she wrote, adding that this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened.

In the comments, many readers encouraged the teen to talk to her mother sooner rather than later.

“The sooner you tell her, the better,” one commenter advised, noting that only the fabric had been ordered so far. “Let her know before she starts making something for you.”

Others echoed the same sentiment, urging a gentle but honest approach. Several suggested thanking her mother for the effort and thought she put into the design, while also explaining that the teen had a different vision for what she wants to wear.

“I think your mom means well,” another commenter wrote, “but you should definitely tell her you don’t like the dress and would rather choose something else.”
