A bride-to-be is raising eyebrows with her plan to enforce a strict “sniff check” at her upcoming wedding.

In a post on Reddit’s “Bridezillas” forum, a friend of the bride shared their disbelief over the unusual wedding rule. According to the post, the bride didn’t reveal her “wedding rules” until all guests had RSVP’d.

“No one is allowed to wear perfume or scented lotion, because she wants her custom wedding scent to be the only thing people smell that day,” the guest wrote.

It’s becoming more common for couples to create a custom wedding perfume to capture the essence of their big day. Since scent is strongly linked to memory and emotion, a personalized fragrance serves as a keepsake and reminder of the celebration. However, the expectation that guests adopt the scent is unusual.

The Redditor said they “thought it was a joke” when the bride insisted that friends and family wear no scents—or swap their usual perfume and cologne for the custom wedding fragrance.

“She even said she’d have someone ‘sniff check’ at the door to make sure,” the guest added. “Honestly, I’ve never seen someone so controlling over the tiniest details.”

In the comments section, Reddit users largely agreed that the bride’s perfume rules and sniff test were over the top.

“Just nonsense,” one person wrote, while another added, “Normalize calling out bridezillas. It’s a wedding. They aren’t being crowned queen of the world.”

Some Redditors suggested that the original poster change their RSVP to “no.” Others jokingly recommended testing the sniff check by wearing unconventional or unpleasant scents, like animal urine or repellent spray, to see how strictly it’s enforced.

Several commenters also noted that some guests may be unable to wear perfume at all due to allergies or migraines triggered by strong scents.
