Linda Stevenson, the wife of Bill Stevenson—who was previously married to Jill Biden—was found dead at her home in Delaware on Dec. 28, authorities confirmed.
Stevenson was 64, according to a statement from the New Castle County Police Department. Officers responded to a reported domestic dispute at a residence in the 1300 block of Idlewood Road in the Oak Hill community at approximately 11:16 p.m. local time.
According to police, officers administered life-saving measures upon arrival, but Stevenson was later pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was found in the living room of the home. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Detectives from the department’s Criminal Investigations Unit responded to the scene, and the Delaware Division of Forensic Science will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Jill Biden, now 74, married Bill Stevenson in 1970 while she was still in college. The marriage ended in divorce in 1975.
In a 2022 interview, biographer Julie Pace reflected on Biden’s first marriage, describing it as a period marked by unmet expectations and emotional hardship. Pace said Biden was very young at the time and later described the divorce as a painful experience that forced her to reassess her future.
The biographer added that Biden coped with the disappointment by compartmentalizing the experience and focusing on building her career.
Biden later married Joe Biden in 1977. The couple remain married.
