A woman shared online that she’s increasingly avoiding relying on friends — and instead turning to ChatGPT for guidance.
Writing on the Mumsnet forum, she admitted that she now seeks advice from her partner, her dad, or the AI chatbot.
“It sounds awful, but if I have something to share or ask for an opinion, I’d rather ask my partner, dad, or ChatGPT,” she explained.
She said past experiences have left her discouraged about maintaining friendships. “When I have had friends and opened up, in the end, we either fall out or they let me down — and I just can’t be bothered with it. I’m happy doing things on my own.”

According to her post, she doesn’t feel particularly motivated to nurture friendships anymore. “I don’t know if I’m getting miserable, but I’m just not bothered by having friends as much anymore,” she wrote. “I have one good friend who I see maybe once a month or so, if that, for a couple of hours, but other than that I don’t really have anyone.”
She asked the Mumsnet community whether she was being unreasonable for stepping away from most social connections.

Responses were mixed. One person commented, “So you’d rather chat to ChatGPT than people? Society’s finished,” while another pointed out, “AI is not your friend.”
But a third user admitted they understood her mindset: “I also don’t enjoy the sense of obligation and effort that comes with friendships either.”
