A woman says a New Year’s Eve celebration with her husband ended with her lying awake, questioning whether she should leave him behind the next morning.

In a Reddit post, the 35-year-old wrote that she was “lying in bed at a NYE party,” an annual gathering she and her now-36-year-old husband had attended for years before marrying in 2025. The event was hosted by his longtime friends, and she said alcohol has long been a source of conflict in their relationship.

She explained that her husband “tends to overdo it” when he drinks, describing him as someone who slurs his words and behaves in ways she finds embarrassing. When that happens, she tries to step in gently to help him slow down, but said her efforts rarely work because he’s already intoxicated.

Past attempts to intervene have backfired, she wrote, with her husband becoming defensive and angry even when she assured him she was “on his team.” After another failed attempt that night, she decided to avoid him altogether so she wouldn’t be “triggered by this behavior.”

Later, when she realized her husband was no longer at the party, she assumed he had gone to their room. She said she followed him with the intention of checking in and resetting the situation, only to find her duffle bag flipped upside down on the floor, its contents scattered.

When she confronted him, she said he admitted to throwing her belongings, telling her, “Of course I did — you are treating me like garbage.” She wrote that she felt “so disgusted” by the moment that she began seriously considering leaving early and going home without him.

Although they live about two hours away and she wasn’t sure how he would get back, she said she wanted to “send a strong message that this is unacceptable,” explaining that she feared the behavior could become a pattern in their marriage.

She added that the couple has been “actively trying to have a baby for two years,” and said the incident forced her to reflect on what kind of environment she wanted for herself and a future child. “I don’t want to be in this situation, nor do I feel I should be,” she wrote.

In an update, the woman said she had been reading and reflecting on responses when her husband briefly returned to the room. She claimed he “mumbled something about me being a buzzkill,” then left the door open with the light on — something she felt was deliberate.

She eventually got up to turn off the light and lock the door, adding that her mother lives nearby and could pick her up in the morning. Unsure of her next steps, she wrote that “a serious conversation and potentially leaving our home for a while seems like a good first step.”

Despite the conflict, she acknowledged the complexity of her emotions. “I obviously love him — I married him just a couple months ago,” she wrote, adding that she isn’t perfect either and needed time to rest and collect her thoughts.

Commenters urged her to take the situation seriously. One warned that unless her husband could have a difficult conversation while sober, the situation was unlikely to improve — especially with the prospect of parenting. Another was more blunt, saying she would be wrong to stay, arguing that his behavior showed a lack of regard for both himself and her, and encouraging her to prioritize her future and safety.
