Woman Forces Husband’s Family to Move Out After Letting Them Live Rent-Free for More Than a Year

A woman is speaking out about a challenging experience with her in-laws that nearly destroyed her marriage.

In a detailed Reddit post, she explained that she and her husband had been married for about two and a half years. In October 2024, she agreed to let his mother and sister stay with them temporarily. At the time, her mother-in-law needed to lose weight before a double knee replacement surgery, and since the two were living in a hotel, the woman decided to help.

“I offered for them to live with us for a while until she had her surgery and recovered,” she wrote. “The idea was that they could save money and get back on their feet.”

The arrangement was intended to last only four or five months. However, the couple lived in a small one-bedroom apartment, and the setup quickly became uncomfortable. “At that time, we had only been married for a year,” she said. “His family was living in our living room, so you can imagine how that was.”

In November 2024, the couple purchased their first home and moved in shortly after Thanksgiving — bringing his mother and sister with them.

By December, troubling patterns began to emerge. “His sister began working less and less until she eventually quit,” the woman said. “His mom’s surgery never happened, and she stopped going to the gym and quit her job as well.”

Neither relative made any effort to contribute financially. The only income came from the mother-in-law’s Social Security and food stamps, which covered only her own expenses. “It was really taxing on our relationship,” the woman explained. “I’m a teacher, and during the summer when I wasn’t working, we had to borrow money from my grandparents just to keep up with the mortgage, especially when our AC broke.”

Despite the strain, her husband’s family didn’t help around the house. “I’d come home from work to a messy house, all the food gone, things broken and nothing replaced,” she recalled.

Eventually, she tried setting boundaries. “When I tried to talk about it, his mom started calling me names and giving me attitude,” she wrote. “We didn’t talk for a month before we ‘made up,’ though I don’t know what I was supposed to forgive them for.”

By July 2025, things came to a head when she discovered her mother-in-law had received a payout from her previous job but used it only to pay off her personal debts. The woman told her she needed to move out by October 1. In response, her mother-in-law called her cold and heartless, saying she hoped she’d never end up in her situation.

The tension escalated further when the sister-in-law confronted her and even “put her hands in [her] face,” which she described as “very triggering.” Her husband continued to avoid confrontation, eventually extending their move-out deadline to December 1.

“Now it’s October 13, and there’s still no progress,” she wrote. “Neither of them has jobs or income. His mom thinks she can buy a house on Social Security alone. We’re not even speaking anymore.”

She asked Reddit: “Am I the a—— for telling them they need to leave, even knowing his mom has surgery coming up and no means to support herself?”

One commenter offered blunt advice: “It has gone on too long. Your husband needs to back you up and have the conversations. The only way he may do it is if you let him know your marriage is on the line. At this point his head is in the sand and he doesn’t want to deal with it.”

Later, the woman returned to share an update. “I considered all these things and made a decision,” she wrote. “Please know this is a lesson definitely learned with all of this. I just know I had good intentions and was just trying to do the right thing.”

“But basically, I told my husband and we got into an argument 🤧 but overall his mom and sister left tonight,” she continued. “She did call me a couple of choice words and say some things to me before she left though… even tried to fight me.”

“They have to come back this week here and there to get their big things out, but we took their keys and someone will be at the house to supervise them while they do,” she added.

“Again, thanks everyone for the advice on this situation,” she concluded. “It was really nice to have different inputs and not be made to feel like I was crazy.”
