A woman is questioning whether she was wrong for replying with a “snappy text” to her sister-in-law’s unsolicited advice in their family group chat.
The 29-year-old mother of three shared her story on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, describing a text exchange that took place on the day she gave birth to her third child last November. The fallout? Her sister-in-law unfriended her on Facebook.
“The women in my husband’s family — his two sisters, our sister-in-law, and his mom — and I have a group chat where we share pictures of our kids, swap funny stories, and sometimes send updates about possible labor,” she wrote in her February 5 Reddit post.
She explained, “On this particular day in November, at 37 weeks plus 5 days gestation, I informed everyone that this might be the day my newest baby would make his grand entrance. I had been experiencing strong contractions since 5:50 a.m. Everyone except my sister-in-law responded with excitement and praying hands emojis.”
By noon, she updated the chat with news from the nurses that she “wasn’t dilated enough to be admitted, despite strong and frequent contractions.”

“I assured everyone that labor would most likely happen that day, based on past experiences, but that I would go home to labor in comfort,” she added before admitting, “This is where I might be the a——.”
That’s when her sister-in-law jumped in.
“My sister-in-law — who also had her third baby a couple of months prior via c-section (I’m not judging or thinking less of her, just giving context) — texted saying how glad she was I wasn’t in ‘real labor’ and suggested it was better to wait a couple more weeks,” the woman shared. “She then sent screenshots and links to articles about false labor and Braxton Hicks contractions … as if I’d never given birth or been pregnant before.”
The mom recalled responding while having a contraction: “Not to be bitchy, but this ain’t my first rodeo, and I know how to Google things as well.”
After being sent home, she returned to the hospital hours later and delivered her baby at 10:15 p.m.
Her sister-in-law hasn’t replied since and has unfriended her on Facebook (though that doesn’t bother her much).
“I just want to know if I was an a—— for what I said, and in hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have been texting in the group chat while in labor,” she concluded.
Within 24 hours, Redditors responded with over 1,300 comments, many agreeing she’s “NTA [not the a——].”
One user wrote, “As someone who gave birth: NTA. As someone whose body doesn’t dilate easily, I know what it’s like to be sent home. You’re told to walk around, and it’s safe as long as your water hasn’t broken.”
Another said, “Those articles and screenshots weren’t necessary when you’ve literally given birth multiple times and didn’t say anything wrong. You know what you’re doing, and you have Google at your fingertips.”
