A former sheriff’s office employee who continued serving his community as a volunteer was fatally struck by a vehicle while directing traffic for a Christmas parade.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the Cumming Police Department announced Sunday, Dec. 14, that Robert Muth — a retired law enforcement professional and local volunteer — died from injuries sustained the night before.
Authorities said that on Saturday evening, Dec. 13, Muth was assisting with traffic control for the City of Cumming’s Christmas parade at the intersection of Castleberry Road and Buford Dam Road when a vehicle hit him. First responders rushed to help, and he was transported to a hospital.
“Surrounded by family members, Rob passed away from his injuries,” the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said in its statement. Because Muth was affiliated with the sheriff’s office, the Cumming Police Department is leading the crash investigation.
Police said their traffic investigation team remained on scene to collect evidence and obtain witness statements. Officials added that the driver involved stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. While the department said “charges will be filed,” it noted the investigation is still active and ongoing.
According to the sheriff’s office, Muth previously served as a sergeant with the Boca Raton, Florida, Police Department for 21 years before retiring. He later joined the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office as a Bluecoat security officer from 2022 to 2024, and afterward continued with the agency as a volunteer.
In a tribute, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office recognized Muth for contributing extensive volunteer hours in support of law enforcement and the broader community.
“His dedication, professionalism, and willingness to serve wherever needed exemplified the very best of our volunteer program,” the agency said.
The sheriff’s office also asked the community to keep Muth’s loved ones — along with the agency’s volunteer and C.E.R.T. (Citizens Emergency Response Team) members — in their thoughts, emphasizing that his service would be remembered.
The Cumming Police Department also expressed condolences to Muth’s family, friends, and colleagues, while underscoring the dangers faced on roadways.
“Traffic accidents are sudden and devastating events that leave lasting impacts on families and communities,” the department said. “This tragic loss is a solemn reminder of how fragile life can be, and of the importance of continued care and responsibility on our roadways.”
