A woman from Wales has spoken about the heartbreaking moment she discovered her partner dead on their sofa — just two days before their twin daughters turned one.

Chloe Powles, 34, from Pencoed, shared her story with Wales Online, explaining that her partner, Alex Green, 30, had been sleeping in the living room so he wouldn’t disturb their twin girls, Livie and Georgina. Both children have rare medical conditions that require constant monitoring.

On the morning of August 20, Chloe went downstairs and found Alex unresponsive.

“At 8:04 a.m., I rang the ambulance because when I came down in the morning, he was sitting up on the sofa, blue and stiff,” she said. “It ruined me — I can’t even put it into words.”

An autopsy is being carried out to determine the cause of Alex’s death, though Chloe said she was told it could take months or even years for a conclusion.

Just two days later, their family gathered to celebrate the twins’ first birthday. Chloe said she couldn’t bring herself to join when everyone began singing “Happy Birthday.”

“I couldn’t do it,” she recalled. “I’m not really coping, but I have to be okay for the girls. It’s just hard. I’d love to just not be okay, but I have the girls to think about.”

Chloe and Alex also each have older daughters from previous relationships. She said that managing the twins’ health issues makes everything even more difficult.

Livie was born with a form of dwarfism that affects her ability to eat and gain weight. She is fed through a tube in her nose and may soon require a feeding tube inserted directly into her stomach.

Georgina, meanwhile, was recently diagnosed with tumors in both eyes. “She was amazing — never without a smile on her face. And then one night, Alex said to me, ‘There’s something wrong with her eyes,’ ” Chloe recalled.

Georgina is now undergoing chemotherapy and has already lost central vision in her right eye. Chloe travels to a hospital in Birmingham, England — about a two-hour drive — every two weeks for her daughter’s treatment.

“It is torture to watch her go through everything,” Chloe said. “Everything is my decision now without Alex — what if I make the wrong decision?”

A friend of the family has created a JustGiving fundraising page to help support Chloe and her daughters during this difficult time. As of Saturday, Nov. 8, the campaign had raised $3,745 toward its goal of $6,580.
