A mother says she’s refusing to hand over a copy of her 16-year-old son’s birth certificate to his grandmother because she doesn’t trust what it will be used for.
In a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——?” forum, the woman explained that her own mother has been pressuring her for the document, claiming she wants to open a bank account for the teenager and deposit money for his future. But the mom says her son already has a savings account she set up when he was a baby — one he won’t be able to access until he turns 18.
“She can not be trusted,” the woman wrote, adding that she offered an alternative: if her mother wants to give money to her grandson, she can hand it to the mom directly so it can be deposited into his existing account.

That suggestion didn’t go over well. The mother says her relatives have been criticizing her for blocking the new account. But she believes their real interest is in the birth certificate itself.
“I’m pretty sure they only want his birth certificate for the registration number to try and commit fraud,” she said.
Uncertain if she was overreacting, the mom asked the online community if she was wrong to refuse. Most commenters backed her decision, with many urging her to keep the document secure and not share it.

One person noted that the grandmother could simply hold onto money in her own account and gift it later. Another was more direct: “Absolutely do not give his birth certificate to them.”
A third commenter advised her to make sure important paperwork is kept somewhere her mother can’t access and to alert both her son and his father about the situation.
