A woman has shared how a long-planned girls’ weekend took an unexpected turn when their hotel allegedly gave away one of the rooms in their group booking.
Writing on the U.K.-based forum Mumsnet, she explained, “Me and some pals went for a girls’ weekend away. We booked and paid for our rooms months ago.”
She said that four of the six friends checked into their two rooms on a Friday night, with the remaining two due to join them the following day — which is when the problems started.
When the last two friends arrived around midday on Saturday, the group went to check them in but were told their additional room was not yet ready. “We tried to check them in when they arrived, around midday, but were told the extra room wasn’t ready yet,” she wrote.
Assuming it was just a standard delay, the group went out to enjoy their day. But when they returned to the hotel around 11 p.m., expecting to finally get their friends settled, they were hit with an unwelcome surprise.
According to the post, staff then informed them that the hotel was overbooked, the third room was no longer available, and two members of the group would have to move to a different hotel altogether.
“The staff on duty seemed utterly bemused that we were furious. As if we were being unreasonable,” she said. “We suggested at the very least they cover our bar bill while we waited for the taxi to take our friends off to another hotel, but no, not possible apparently.”

In the comments under her post, many users felt the group was justified in being upset and said the hotel should have honored the full booking.
“The fact that they arrived early and made themselves known should have carried some weight,” one commenter wrote.
Others acknowledged that overbooking does happen in the hotel industry but argued that the property should have managed the situation far better — especially for a group reservation.
“Very poor of the hotel to bump the third room in a group booking, especially when you had already arrived,” one response read.
Another added that the hotel should have been upfront about the risk earlier in the day: “The hotel should have told you there was a risk of being bumped rather than let you go off for the day. Nothing you can do about it apart from leave a poor review.”
