A woman was left stunned after discovering that her boyfriend had purchased the dream dress she’d been longing for — only to give it to his mother instead of her.
In a Reddit post, an anonymous 23-year-old shared that she’s been in a relationship with her boyfriend for three years. Recently, while shopping together, she spotted a “gorgeous” dress in her favorite color.
“He said the dress was beautiful, but since it was pricey ($200), we didn’t buy it,” she explained. “For weeks after, I kept talking about the dress and how I hoped to save up and get it someday since we’ve been budgeting.”
“He heard about it all the time and even said how great he thought it would look on me,” she added.

Cut to her birthday, when they held a small gathering at home. To her shock, his mother showed up wearing that exact dress.
“I was speechless. I thought maybe he had told her about it and she got it herself — but that wasn’t the case,” the woman wrote. “I blurted out, ‘OMG, that’s the same dress I was obsessed with for months,’ and she replied, ‘Oh really? Zayne (my boyfriend) gave it to me as a gift last month.’”
She was left “shocked and confused,” especially after opening her own gift from him — a $50 Sephora gift card.
“I spent the rest of the night quietly sitting in a corner, feeling hurt and confused,” she recalled. “I couldn’t understand what was happening.”
When she confronted him, he told her she “needed to be humbled a bit because I got way too overly excited about something as trivial as a dress.”
His mother, she said, “had no idea and just thought he was giving her a gift.”

Other Reddit users quickly advised her to reconsider the relationship, pointing out what seemed like a deliberate attempt by the boyfriend to hurt her.
One commenter wrote, “Nobody is that clueless. He told her it was too expensive, then went out of his way to buy it for his mom. This is a huge red flag — get out now.”
Another added, “What he did was calculated and cruel. If you stay, it will only get worse.”
In an update, the woman revealed she and her boyfriend “are over for good.”
“He keeps calling me, but I won’t answer. There’s nothing he can say or do to change that,” she shared. “I’ve realized this shows a side of him he kept hidden until now.”
