Human remains were reportedly discovered in the basement of an apartment building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Sunday, Feb. 1.
A janitor found what appeared to be a woman’s body in the basement of The Borinquen Public Houses at 330 Bushwick Avenue at around 9:30 a.m., according to WABC, CBS News and News12.
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) employees were working on a lower level of the building when they came across a heavy bag, WABC reported. After opening it, they discovered human remains that appeared to have been cut into pieces.
Authorities were called to the scene. Investigators believe the remains may belong to a woman in her 50s or 60s, according to WABC.
News 12 cameras captured NYPD crime scene personnel taking photos of trash bags in the incinerator room. Witnesses also told the outlet that large bags were removed from the building.
“The workers heard screaming. They realized the bags are too heavy, so they opened it up and the first thing they saw was the head staring at them, so they ain’t going to be the same anymore. These people work in these buildings,” neighbor Vincent Valcassel told WABC.

Residents said the discovery has left the community shaken.
“I’m like scared out of my mind. I don’t know what it’s going to go like, if it’s going to continue happening, or is this like a one-time incident?” Aniel Riveyra said.
A resident also told News 12 they were horrified by the way the woman was left behind.
“To take a lady and leave her like that, we are human beings, we are not trash,” the resident said.

Another resident raised concerns about building access, telling News 12: “I don’t even know people have access to the basement. These doors to the buildings are always open, people bring others in and they do all kinds of things.”
According to News 12, the remains were removed from the scene. The woman’s cause of death is expected to be determined by the medical examiner.
