A 15-year-old high school student in Scotland has died after becoming suddenly unwell on a bus during a school outing.

The incident happened on Monday, Nov. 24, in Dunfermline, a city in Fife, Scotland. A group of students from Beath High School were traveling to Fife College for a class when the teenager fell ill, according to local outlets including the BBC, The Herald, The Courier and STV News.

“Around 1.45 p.m. on Monday, we received a report that a 15-year-old male had become unwell on a bus at A92 Halbeath roundabout, Dunfermline,” a Police Scotland spokesperson said in a statement shared with The Courier.

“Emergency services attended, and he was pronounced dead at the scene,” authorities added. “His death is being treated as unexplained, and inquiries are ongoing.”

In a letter to parents, Beath High School headteacher Stephen Ross also confirmed the student’s death. His name has not been made public.

“The situation deteriorated rapidly and even though an ambulance attended, tragically, the young person has passed away,” Ross wrote.

“We are all devastated by this news, and our thoughts are very much with the family and loved ones at this sensitive and difficult time,” he continued.

“We are looking after our young people and arranging support across the school community, providing space, time and help to those who need it,” Ross added.

Police Scotland and Beath High School were contacted on Tuesday, Nov. 25, for comment.

Beath High School is located in the town of Cowdenbeath in Fife, Scotland.
