15-Year-Old Compared to ‘Cinderella’ After Family Asks Her to Cook for a Dinner Party She Wasn’t Even Invited to

The holidays are usually painted as a season of togetherness — but for one teenager, Christmas turned into a messy mix of family pressure and feeling left out.

In a recent Reddit post, a 15-year-old wrote that baking and cooking are central to how she shows love.

“Most of the time I’m making everyone little treats to try or I’m cooking dinner for my family from our background and it’s sort of one of my love languages,” she explained.

Normally, her family opens gifts at home and then heads to a relative’s house for lunch or dinner. This year, though, her mom told her they wouldn’t all be spending Christmas together — something the teen initially accepted.

Then her aunt called with a surprising question: had she decided what food she’d be making for Christmas night?

“I asked what she meant and she told me she’s having a party and [my] mum promised I’d make food for everyone,” the teen wrote.

At first, she was genuinely excited. Cooking for the gathering felt like a chance to share what she loves with the people around her.

But the mood quickly shifted when she learned the event was considered an “adult” party — and that she wasn’t invited, even though cousins her age would be there.

“I was kind of upset and asked why I was the only one not going. She said my mum thinks I’m just not mature enough for a late party,” she wrote.

Upset and confused, she confronted her mother, hoping for a clearer explanation. Instead, she said she was shut down.

“I went to my mum and she didn’t see a problem with me not going, but I told her there’s no way im putting effort into that if I’m being excluded,” she wrote. “I started crying atp and it made my mum angry and she said i was being selfish and acting like a child.”

“I kept pressing for a proper reason but my mum kept saying ‘I don’t want you going and I’m your mother so that’s that.’ ”

That’s when she decided she wouldn’t cook for the party after all — and told her mother, “Then order it.”

Her father later offered another option: spending Christmas with him instead. The catch? He lived about two hours away from her mom’s side of the family — and without her cooking, the party suddenly had no meal plan.

The teen said she suggested easy alternatives like local chicken shops or frozen food, but her family refused to consider them.

“While they didn’t want me there, I know everyone was counting on me for food and now from their perspective I’m saying no and being selfish because I wanted to spend Christmas with dad,” she wrote.

In the comments, many people backed her up — arguing that if she was “old enough” to cook for a room full of guests, she should be old enough to attend.

“You are old enough to cook for the party, but not old enough to actually go to the party?” one user wrote. “That’s not how it works. Who does your family think you are, Cinderella?”

Others encouraged her to step away from the responsibility entirely and let the adults handle their own arrangements.

“They wanted your free services to create a full meal for a group of people and you’re not invited?! Insanely rude,” another commenter wrote. “Go enjoy Christmas with people who do appreciate/love you.”
