A teenage girl was collecting water from a river when a nearby animal attacked her.
On Monday, Sept. 15, 15-year-old Shivani Kevat was filling pots with water on the banks of the Parvati River in Rajasthan, India, when a crocodile lunged at her, according to The Independent and the Hindustan Times, citing Kishanganj police.
The crocodile dragged Kevat, who lived in Mehatabpura village, into the river, which caught the attention of nearby workers.
Some witnesses tried to scare the crocodile away by taking boats into the water, but they were unable to rescue her, The Independent reported.
Kishanganj police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Kevat went missing in the river, prompting a search and rescue operation. After several hours with no success, the search was called off later that night, according to The Independent.

The next morning, Tuesday, Sept. 16, Kevat’s body was seen floating in the river by bystanders, as reported by The Independent and the Hindustan Times.
A medical team was called to the scene, but the teenager had died, Hindustan Times reported.
Kevat’s autopsy revealed that she did not die from the injuries caused by the crocodile. The official cause of death was drowning.
Police said there were no injuries beyond the deep marks from the crocodile’s grip, according to The Independent and the Hindustan Times.
After the autopsy, Kevat’s body was handed over to her family.
