16-Year-Old Soccer Player Shot Dead at Home by Stray Bullet as His Team Express Their ‘Deep Sorrow’

A 16-year-old soccer player in Ecuador has died after being struck by a stray bullet while inside his home in Guayaquil.

Authorities confirmed on Wednesday, Nov. 5, that the victim, identified as Miguel Nazareno, succumbed to his injuries, according to the Associated Press.

Nazareno’s youth academy, Independiente del Valle, shared a heartfelt tribute to the teenager on Instagram.

“The family of Independiente del Valle expresses its deep sorrow for the sensitive passing of Miguel Nazareno, player of our quarry in Independiente Juniors. 💙🖤,” the message read in Spanish. “Miguel was in his home when he sadly fell victim to the insecurity that affects our country.”

The academy continued, “We extend our deepest condolences and all our support to his family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time.”

“Your memory will always remain in the heart of our institution. 💐,” they added in closing.

Nazareno, who played as a midfielder and forward, was remembered by fans and teammates in the post’s comments. One person wrote, “Much strength and blessings to the family 🙏🕊️,” while another added, “Rest in peace, mijo 😢😢.”

The Associated Press reported that Nazareno is the fourth soccer player to fall victim to gun violence in Ecuador in 2025, following the deaths of Maicol Valencia, Leandro Yépez, and Jonathan González in September. Valencia and Yépez were players for Exapromo Costa, while González represented 22 de Junio.

In a similar tragedy last month, a 14-year-old in Missouri was killed by a stray bullet while playing video games in his bedroom. The St. Louis County Police Department said “the preliminary investigation indicates an unknown subject or subjects fired shots in the area, and the victim was struck.”

“The investigation revealed Morgan was inside his home when he was hit by a stray bullet from outside,” officials added.
