Two people are dead and four others injured following a fiery single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in Conroe, Texas.

According to a press release shared on Facebook by the Conroe Police Department, the crash occurred around 2:00 a.m. on August 2 in the 2300 block of White Oak Blvd at Park Blvd, located just outside Houston.

“Patrol officers arrived quickly and discovered a white Kia Soul fully engulfed in flames,” the department said. “Several civilians had removed four occupants from the burning vehicle before emergency personnel arrived. All four victims were immediately transported to local area hospitals.”

Of the four transported, one is reported to be in “very critical condition,” while the other three are described as “critical but stable.”

“Tragically, the 22-year-old driver and one passenger were unable to be rescued and were pronounced deceased at the scene,” the statement continued. “The Conroe Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.”

PEOPLE has reached out to the Conroe Police Department for additional information.

The Conroe Police Department’s Traffic Fatality Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating the incident. According to preliminary findings, the Kia Soul was traveling westbound on White Oak Blvd at a high speed when it veered off the roadway and crashed head-on into a tree at an intersection.

Investigators believe that both speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors.

“Our first responders mourn alongside these families as they navigate this terribly difficult time. We are deeply grateful for the courageous actions of those who assisted removing the surviving victims,” Police Chief Jon Buckholtz said in a statement. “On behalf of the Conroe Police Department, we extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the victims and their families as they begin the long road to healing after this terrible morning.”

Authorities said those involved in the crash were between 16 and 22 years old. Their identities have not been released at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing.
