Two people have died and five others were hospitalized after a severe house fire in Los Angeles.

The blaze broke out around 11:10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, in the 10900 block of North Scoville Avenue in the Sunland neighborhood, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

When firefighters arrived, they found a one-story, single-family home completely engulfed in flames. Crews launched an aggressive interior attack while simultaneously searching for anyone trapped inside. The LAFD noted that no alarms were heard during the rescue, and it is unclear if the home — built in 1948 — had working smoke detectors.

Of the eight people involved, five were taken to the hospital with injuries of varying severity. Another declined transport, while two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Among those injured was an 87-year-old man discovered outside the 1,359-square-foot residence with critical burn injuries. First responders administered emergency care before transporting him to the hospital.

Four additional adults who were outside the house when help arrived suffered different levels of smoke inhalation and were also taken for medical treatment, the LAFD said.

A total of 36 firefighters, led by Battalion Chief Scott Hilton, managed to extinguish the flames within 30 minutes. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death for the two deceased victims.

The LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) is investigating the cause of the fire.

About 16 residents from two buildings on the property were displaced. The American Red Cross Los Angeles Region and the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team have coordinated to provide emergency assistance and support to those affected.
