Authorities in St. Cloud, Minnesota, have arrested and charged Dylan Tobler following the fatal stabbing of his wife, 22-year-old Hallie Marie Tobler, officials confirmed this week.
The St. Cloud Police Department said Dylan Tobler, 23, was taken into custody on Tuesday after being medically cleared and released from a local hospital. He had been receiving treatment for stab wounds that investigators believe were self-inflicted.
Police stated that officers had maintained guard over Tobler during his hospitalization and immediately transported him to the Stearns County Jail upon his release. He is being held on a charge of second-degree murder.
“This investigation remains active with the assistance of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension,” authorities said in a statement. Officials urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact the St. Cloud Police Department or Tri-County Crime Stoppers.
Booking records from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office indicate Tobler was booked on Feb. 10 and is facing a felony charge of “2nd Degree – With Intent – Not Premeditated.”
Hallie Marie Tobler was the daughter of former St. Cloud city councilman Jeff Johnson, a Minnesota Republican who had been campaigning for governor. Following news of his daughter’s death, Johnson suspended his campaign.
In a public statement, the Minnesota Republican Party expressed condolences to Johnson and his family, describing the loss as “unimaginable” and offering support during what it called a devastating tragedy.
Several political figures also shared messages of sympathy.
Minnesota state Representative Kristin Robbins said she was “heartbroken” by the tragedy and offered prayers for the Johnson family.
U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar also extended condolences, writing that her thoughts were with the family and those who loved Hallie.
The Minnesota governor’s race continues with remaining Republican candidates including MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, retired MMA fighter Brad Kohler, and others seeking the GOP nomination. The seat will be vacated by Governor Tim Walz.
