Detectives with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) are investigating the death of a 38-year-old athlete who drowned Saturday during the swimming portion of the Ironman Texas triathlon.
The victim, identified by Brazilian media as triathlete and social media influencer Mara Flávia, disappeared beneath the surface of Lake Woodlands shortly after the race commenced. The Woodlands Fire Department recovered her body near North Shore Park at approximately 9:00 a.m. local time.
The MCSO Major Crimes unit is treating the incident as a standard death investigation. According to witness statements and race volunteers, the emergency began with frantic signals from a group of kayakers on the water.

Shawn McDonald, a volunteer who attempted a rescue, described a scene of immediate panic. McDonald reported that fellow swimmers alerted him that a participant had gone under. Despite multiple dives into the lake, responders could not locate Flávia in time to provide life-saving measures.
“I could see swimmers clinging to their kayak. I heard them say, ‘She went under,’” McDonald stated, noting that search efforts continued for nearly an hour before the dive team retrieved the body.
Ironman Texas organizers confirmed the fatality in a statement released Saturday afternoon.
“We are saddened to confirm the death of a race participant during the swim portion of today’s Ironman Texas triathlon,” the organization said. “We send our deepest sympathies to the family and will offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time.”

The Ironman Texas course is a premiere endurance event consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run.
Flávia was a prominent figure in the Brazilian endurance community, boasting more than 60,000 followers on Instagram. A journalism graduate, she spent a decade working in radio and television before pivoting to a professional sporting career at age 28.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has not released an official cause of death pending an autopsy. Investigators remain on-site to interview witnesses and review race safety protocols.
