A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized and a horse was killed after a vehicle crashed into an Amish horse-drawn wagon carrying eight people in upstate New York, according to authorities.
The accident happened on Monday, Sept. 1, at about 5:37 p.m. on Route 5 near Bellinger Road in Danube, a small town in Herkimer County, the New York State Police said in a statement.
Investigators said 73-year-old Laurie M. Callan was driving a 2012 Dodge eastbound when she struck the back of the horse-drawn wagon. The buggy, pulled by two horses, went off the road, ejecting all eight passengers.
Callan’s car overturned and landed in the westbound lane, police said.
A 6-year-old boy riding in the wagon was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Callan also went to a hospital on her own with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The wagon’s driver, 31-year-old Daniel Stoltzfus, and the other passengers were not hurt. One of the two horses pulling the wagon was killed in the crash, and its owner removed the animal from the scene.
Callan received citations for following too closely, failing to use proper caution to avoid colliding with a horse on the road, and driving at an unreasonable speed, officials said.
The New York State Police said the crash is still under investigation.
