An 8-year-old girl identified as Jasmine Nguyen has died from severe burn injuries sustained in an illegal fireworks explosion during Fourth of July celebrations in Anaheim, authorities confirmed on Monday. The incident occurred in the Buena Park neighborhood, where fireworks are banned under California state law.
According to the Orange County coroner’s office, Jasmine succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to UCI Medical Center by first responders who found her on the 8000 block of Cornflower Circle. She had been injured by a firework explosion and was being carried by her parents when police arrived.
Suspect Arrested
Earl DeCastro, 46, was arrested in connection with the deadly explosion and is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, Buena Park police said. He was later released on $25,000 bail, and the case is now under review by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities say the fireworks involved were part of an unauthorized display, as “dangerous fireworks” are illegal in California without a special permit. The investigation remains ongoing.

Jasmine Nguyen was a student in the Anaheim Elementary School District, which issued a statement expressing heartbreak over her death.
“At this time, we are focused on supporting the student’s family and our school community,” the district said. “Out of respect for the family and in accordance with student privacy laws, no further details will be shared at this time. We ask for compassion for all affected.”
